James Spencer offers practical insights that help his business clients better manage their workplaces with respect to both employment law and employee benefits matters. Mr. Spencer advises business clients on federal and state laws affecting employers, including FLSA, ADA, FMLA, USERRA, COBRA, ERISA, and Section 409A of the Internal Revenue Code. He also drafts employee handbooks and policies, executive contracts of employment, and nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements.

Prior to joining the firm, he served as in-house counsel for a national non-profit corporation and was in private practice. His responsibilities included employment law, contracts, litigation, and negotiations. While in law school, Mr. Spencer was a member of The University of Kansas Law Review and received an Am Jur Award in Legal Research & Writing. Upon graduation, he was inducted into The Order of the Coif.
